I think you already understand that I love owls. So after Owls Blanket and Owl coaster I had to make the owls’ purse. I tried to imagine it for a long time bit all in vain.  I want it be not funny but really cute. And after many attempts I got my Owl purse “Blue Dreams”. Want to share with you the pattern and hope you will like the result!

PATTERN.

Materials:

  • Any cotton 100% Weight/Yardage 50g/137yds: Cascade Ultra Pima Fine, 100% cotton or Schachenmayr Catania, etc.
  • Size D/3 (3 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Magnetic closure
  • Scissors

Instructions.

Body.

Increase rounds.

Round 1: Magic ring, ch 2, 11 dc in ring, join with ss in ch2. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 2 dc in each chain stitch around, join with ss in ch 2. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat around, join with ss. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 2 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (48 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 3 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 3 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (60 sts)

Round 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 4 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 4 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (72 sts)

Round 7: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 5 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 5 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (84 sts)

Round 8: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 6 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 6 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (96 sts)

Round 9: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 7 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 7 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (108 sts)

Round 10: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 8 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 8 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (120 sts). Break yarn and fasten off.

Make another side just like the one you just made.

Then sc each side around:  Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, 1 sc in next 9 sts , *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 9 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (132 sts). Break yarn and fasten off.

Wings.

Increase rounds

Round 1: Magic ring, ch 2, 11 dc in ring, join with ss in ch2. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 2 dc in each chain stitch around, join with ss in ch 2. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat around, join with ss. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in next 2 sts , *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (48 sts). Break yarn and fasten off.

Make another wing just like the one you just made.

Time to decorate our wings. I used slip stiches as you can see at the picture below.

Let’s make the feathers.

Row 1: Chain 33, turn your work, dc in the 7th stitch from hook , 1 ch, 1 dc in the same st (V-stitch made), ch 2, miss next 2 stitches and 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, ch 2, * miss next 2 stitches and 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, 1 ch, 1 dc in the same st (V-st made), ch 2, 1 dc in the 3rd stitch* repeat till the end. Turn your work. Now you have 5 V-sts.

Row 2: *Work 5 dc down post of first dc of next V-st. Ch 1. Work 5 dc up post of 2nd dc of the same V-st – scale st made. Ss in the top of the next dc.* Repeat from * to * till the end. (But in the end make ss in the chain space). Turn. 5 scale sts. Break yarn and fasten off.

Eyes.

Round 1: Magic ring with black color, ch 2, 11 dc in ring, join with ss in ch 2. (11 sts) Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 2: Chain with bright blue color,*2 sc in stitch* repeat 3 times, *2 dc in stitch* repeat 5 times, *2 sc in stitch* repeat 3 times, join with ss. (22 sts) Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 3: Chain with lilac color,*sc, 2 sc in stitch* repeat 2 times, sc, 2 hdc in stitch, *dc, 2 dc in stitch* repeat 5 times, hdc, *2 sc, sc in stitch* repeat 2 times, 2 sc, join with ss. (33 sts) Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 4: Chain with violet color,*sc, sc, 2 sc in stitch* repeat 2 times, *hdc, 2 hdc in stitch * repeat 2 times, *2 dc in stitch, dc * repeat 5 times, 2 hdc in stitch, hdc, *2 sc, sc in stitch* repeat 5 times, 2 sc, join with ss. (49 sts). Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 5: Chain with blue color, 12 sc, hdc, hdc, 2 hdc in stitch, * 1 dc, 2 dc in stitch* repeat 8 times, hdc, hdc, 18 sc, join with ss. (60 sts) Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 6: Chain and sc around with white color. Break yarn and fasten off.

Beak.

Chain 5 with yellow color, turn your work.

Row 1: sc in each stitch (4 sc), turn.

Row 2: sc in 2nd st, make 2 sc together (decreasing), (2 sc), turn.

Row 3: sc in 2nd stitch, break yarn and fasten off.

Feathers.

Row 1 (wrong side): Chain 40 with light blue color, turn your work, dc in the 7th stitch from hook , 1 ch, 1 dc in the same st (V-stitch made), ch 2, miss next 2 stitches and 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, ch 2, * miss next 2 stitches and 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, 1 ch, 1 dc in the same st (V-st made), ch 2, 1 dc in the 3rd stitch* repeat till the end. Turn your work. Now you have 6 V-sts.

Row 2:  Work 5 dc down post of first dc of first V-st. Ch 1.

Work 5 dc up post of 2nd dc of the same V-st – beg scale st made.

Make a slip stitch in the top of the next dc. *Work 5 dc down post of first dc of next V-st. Ch 1. Work 5 dc up post of 2nd dc of the same V-st – scale st made. Ss in the top of the next dc.* Repeat from * to last dc. Turn. 6 scale sts.

(But in the end make ss in the chain space).

Row 3:  Ch 4, dc in the chain space, *2 ch, 1 dc into the gap between dcs, 2 ch , 1dc, ch, 1 dc in the top of the dc between scales*. Repeat from * to * till the end. Turn. 6 V-stitches.

Row 4:  *Work 5 dc down post of first dc of the V-st. Ch 1. Work 5 dc up post of 2nd dc of the same V-st – scale st made. Ss in the top of the next dc.* Repeat from *to *  till the end. (But in the end don’t make ss).Turn. 7 scale sts.

 

Row 51 sc into the gap between dcs, 4 ch, 1dc, ch, 1 dc in the top of the dc between scales, 2 ch, 1 dc into the gap between dcs, *, 2 ch, 1dc, ch, 1 dc in the top of the dc between scales, 2 ch, 1 dc into the gap between dcs*. Repeat from *to * till the end.

Row 6:  *Work 5 dc down post of first dc of next V-st. Ch 1. Work 5 dc up post of 2nd  dc of the same V-st – scale st made. Ss in the top of the next dc.* Repeat from * to * till the end. (But in the end make ss in the chain space). Turn. 6 scale sts.

Repeat from 3rd to 6th rows 2 times more, ending on a 6th row.

Now let’s make decreasing.

Row 15:  1 sc into the gap between dcs, 4 ch, 1dc, ch, 1 dc in the top of the dc between scales, 2 ch, 1 dc into the gap between dcs, *, 2 ch, 1dc, ch, 1 dc in the top of the dc between scales, 2 ch, 1 dc into the gap between dcs*. Repeat from *to * till the end.

Row 16:  *Work 5 dc down post of first dc of next V-st. Ch 1. Work 5 dc up post of  2nd dc of the same V-st – scale st made. Ss in the top of the next dc.* Repeat from * to * till the end. (But in the end make ss in the chain space). Turn. 5 scale sts. Break yarn and fasten off.

And let’s make the bottom row of the feathers.

Row 1 (WS): Chain 29, turn your work, dc in the 7th stitch from hook , 1 ch, 1 dc in the same st (V-stitch made), ch 2, miss next 2 stitches and 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, ch 2, * miss next 2 stitches and 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, 1 ch, 1 dc in the same st (V-st made), ch 2, 1 dc in the 3rd stitch* repeat till the end. Turn your work. Now you have 4 V-sts.

Row 2: *Work 5 dc down post of first dc of next V-st. Ch 1. Work 5 dc up post of 2nd  dc of the same V-st – scale st made. Ss in the top of the next dc.* Repeat from * to * till the end. (But in the end make ss in the chain space). Turn. 4 scale sts. Break yarn and fasten off.

Top Flap.

Row 1: 30 dc around the body, ch 2. Turn your work.

Row 2-11: 30 dc, ch 2. Turn.

Row 12: 30 dc. Break yarn and fasten off.

Assembling

  • Let’s sew feathers to the front of our owl.

  • Now join your two bag parts wrong sides together. Try to line up them up so they match. You are going to sc around the outside of them to attach them and you want to them to be perfectly lined up. Now stick your hook through both sides and pull the yarn through  and sc with the blue color : Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, 1 sc in next 10 sts , *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 10 sts* repeat around, join with ss. (144 sts).

But when you reach the top flap, let’s sc the top flap around, sc each stitch and make 3 sc at the edges:

Break yarn and fasten off.

  • Sew the eyes and the beak to the top flap.
  • Then sew the wings on the sides:
  • Sew the magnetic closure.

Straps.

Chain 240 with bright blue color, turn your work.

Row 1: sc in each stitch with lilac color ( 240 sc), turn.

Row 2: with violet color chain 4, sc in the third ch, sc in the third st of the previous row, *chain 3, sc in the third ch, miss 2 stitches and sc in the third st of the previous row*, repeat till the end. Break yarn and fasten off.
